How to choose whether it's better to buy or rent an electric wheelchair or walker in Mexico?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer: it depends on how long you'll need the equipment, whether your insurance covers it, and if you want to try out the model before committing. This guide summarizes common scenarios to help you make a calm decision.

Quick response

Rent when the need is temporary — post-operative recovery, family visit, model testing or while processing insurance reimbursement. Buy when daily and long-term use is expected. Rent with option to buy if you're unsure: test without losing what you've paid if you decide to keep the product.

When is renting or buying beneficial?

When it's best to rent

  • Temporary need: knee or hip surgery, fracture, home recovery or short trip where you need extra support.
  • Try before you buy: want to feel the model, the seat, and autonomy in your real routine before investing.
  • Limited initial budget: renting daily, weekly or monthly gives immediate access without a large upfront payment.
  • High-value equipment: electric wheelchairs or StairPro that you'll only need for a few weeks — renting may be more sensible than buying immediately.
  • While waiting for insurance approval: you can rent today and if your policy approves the purchase later, evaluate whether it's worth keeping the equipment or switching models.

When to buy

  • Daily and permanent use: chronic mobility impairment, elderly person who regularly goes out or prolonged dependence on equipment.
  • Long-term total cost: if you will use it for months or years, buying (with interest-free monthly payments or ANDAFACIL PAY) usually costs less than continuous renting.
  • Customization and adaptations: cushions, backrests, or accessories that you will install once in your wheelchair or walker.
  • Senior health insurance: many medical expense policies cover prescribed wheelchairs and walkers — check with your insurer; Andafacil works with major insurers in Mexico.
  • Peace of mind ownership: warranty, parts and post-purchase support on an equipment that will be yours.

Private insurance, IMSS and ISSSTE

In Mexico, you can obtain mobility equipment through various means: the IMSS and the ISSSTE (with its own processing times), or a private major medical expense insurance (GMM) if you have supplemental or corporate health insurance.

With private health insurance, many insurers cover wheelchairs, walkers, and mobility accessories when there's a medical indication. Each policy defines amounts, deductibles, copays, and documentation — that’s why it pays to talk with your insurance agent before buying or renting to confirm what applies to your plan.

While waiting for authorization from IMSS, ISSSTE, or your insurer, renting is usually the most practical option to avoid being immobile. If your insurance approves the purchase, you typically need a prescription or medical indication and a receipt in the name of the policyholder. At Andafacil we issue receipts and can guide you on usual documentation — final approval depends on your insurer.

The middle ground: Rent-to-own option

You can rent an eligible product (more than $500 MXN; accessories from $3,000 MXN) and, if you decide to buy it, what you have already paid for the rental is credited toward the purchase. You only pay the difference and keep the product. This way you can start renting — for example, a week post-hospital discharge — and, if you confirm that this model is right for you, just pay the difference to own it.

If you decide to buy: interest-free monthly payments and ANDAFACIL PAY

What we offer for purchase interest-free monthly payments with credit card (based on product amount) and ANDAFACIL PAY if you don't have a card or prefer a plan with 50% down payment and biweekly payments.

  • 3 interest-free monthly payments for products of $2,999 or more
  • 6 interest-free monthly payments for products of $11,999 or more
  • 12 interest-free monthly payments for products of $16,999 or more

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent any product Andafacil?

Yes. All products can be purchased or rented daily, weekly or monthly depending on availability of the model.

What is rent-to-own?

If you rent and later decide to buy, what you have already paid for rental will be credited towards the purchase. You only pay the difference and get to keep the product.

Does my private health insurance cover the wheelchair or walker?

Many major medical insurance (GMM) policies cover wheelchairs, walkers, and mobility equipment with a prescription or doctor’s recommendation. Coverage, amounts, and deductibles vary by insurer and plan — check with your insurance agent before purchasing. Andafacil works with the main Mexican insurers, issues invoices, and can guide you on typical documentation for reimbursement.
